Project: Relative Music Theory: A Revolutionary Approach to Musical Notation
Stage: Development
Started: 2014-06-01
Est. Completion: 2025-06-01
Funding: Self-funded
Audience: RMT's target audience is diverse, encompassing composers, musicians, music theorists, instrument builders, software developers, and researchers. It appeals to those working in traditional composition, world music preservation, interactive music generation, digital audio workstations, and innovative instrument design. The theory's versatility makes it relevant to anyone seeking more precise and flexible ways to create, analyze, or interact with music across various cultural and technological contexts.
Tech Stack: Javascript / WebAudio API / tapspace.js
Team Size: Solo (Just me)
Goal: Establish the foundations for a universal musical language, create a usable interface for composing with it.
Overview: Relative Music Theory (RMT) defines a note's pitch in relation to other notes, rather than as fixed frequencies. This approach allows for the precise notation of natural harmonics beyond octaves and fifths, solving limitations in traditional musical notation. RMT has far-reaching implications for composition, transcription of world music, and computer-generated music, potentially revolutionizing how we create, analyze, and preserve musical traditions. By providing a more versatile and accurate system for representing musical relationships, RMT enables musicians, composers, and researchers to explore and express a wider range of musical ideas. This theory not only enhances our understanding of existing musical forms but also paves the way for new creative possibilities in both acoustic and electronic music realms.
Support Needed: Seeking minds that are interested in developing the concept. Sharing any ideas, reflexions or reactions to the concept; any feedback, positive or negative is welcome!
